Katie Bowen is a jazz vocalist who uses contemporary modalities to explore the timelessness of music on her recently released album, “A Spell Like This.” …The instrumental setting for this album is tasty enough to serve as the main course…but with Bowen’s smooth and sultry tones [these songs] rise to a sound that crosses numerous musical boundaries and bears repeated listening to reveal layers of subtlety.
